World Ice Cream Day: What’s the scoop?

urban kept its pledge to treat staff despite some dreary July weather last week!  In honour of World Ice Cream Day (and as an excuse to say thank you to its staff for their continued hard work), the urban Board delighted employees with some sweet summer treats.

Worldwide appeal

In what must surely be one of his finest moments as President, Ronald Reagan originated National Ice Cream Day in the US in 1984. The universal appeal of this frozen fix, which transcends country, culture and age, soon led to the establishment of World Ice Cream Day, held annually on the third Sunday of July.

For much of the world, it’s a great way to cool off in the heat of one of the warmest times of the year, and for the Brits, it’s a handy reminder that it’s actually summer, even though we haven’t seen the sun for the last 4 weeks!

Proactive candidate sourcing

Beyond our market knowledge and understanding of candidate attraction, our recruitment consultants have established pools of pre-qualified and experienced candidates within their networks, who you would not have access to if you were relying on active candidates to apply. These pools have been built over many years and include those who may not be actively looking for new positions but would move for the right opportunity.

Our recruitment consultants will also proactively source candidates by searching job board databases, searching our internal database, networking and recommendations. This opens a whole new channel of talent that is not accessible by advertising alone.

Did you know..?

  • Ice cream is believed to have originated in China around 200BC and been enjoyed by Alexander the Great
  • Gelato is the Italian version of ice cream, with less fat, a creamier texture and richer flavour
  • Despite the myriad of choice and combos now available, vanilla remains the most popular choice worldwide
  • Soft serve ice cream was invented in the 1930s and popularised by franchises such as McDonalds
  • Ice cream first appeared in the UK in 1671 at a banquet at Windsor Castle, and was only available to the very wealthy

Time for treats!

So, despite the typically overcast British weather, CEO Darren Day and Founder and Executive Director Clive Hutchings were determined to show their appreciation for their staff with a visit from Dan’s Delights Ice Cream Van! Clive even had a go at creating Darren’s ideal ice cream himself by jumping into the van – realising a childhood dream shared by many of us!

Darren commented:

“To celebrate this wonderful ‘British Summer’ and acknowledge the continued hard work of our colleagues, we arranged for an ice cream van to visit our offices at lunchtime.

In today’s relatively flat market, everyone is working hard each day to make every call and connection count, so it’s important to just step away from the desk for a few minutes, recharge and catch up with other colleagues across the business, be it for a coffee, a chat or for today, an ice cream! Mine’s a flake and strawberry sauce by the way…”

Emily Leng, 25, who’s been with the Group for 2.5 years stated:

“It’s so lovely how the Board provides these thoughtful touches that shows their continued appreciation for your hard work and helps to enhance your feeling of wellbeing. A Mr Whippy with sprinkles and strawberry sauce was just what I needed today!”
