On 10th October each year, the world comes together in support of World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and advocating for more support and understanding. And what better way to do that than with a splash of sunshine? That’s why this year’s celebration is all about saying, Hello Yellow!
Yellow is often associated with warmth, optimism and happiness. It’s the colour of sunshine, symbolising hope and positivity. The #HelloYellow campaign, organised by the UK-based charity YoungMinds, focuses on helping young people feel heard and supported. The world can be a really tough place for children and young people to grow up in. YoungMinds works to let young people know that they don’t have to go through anything alone: things can get better.
The campaign reminds us that mental health should be prioritised in schools, workplaces and communities. By simply wearing yellow or donating, we can be a part of the change.
Mental health affects everyone, whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, depression or just trying to navigate the ups and downs of life. Yet talking about mental health still carries a stigma in many societies. World Mental Health Day provides a platform to change that. This day encourages everyone to have open, honest conversations about mental wellbeing.
That’s why on this World Mental Health Day, we encouraged all our staff to wear yellow to help raise awareness and make a donation to this hugely important charity. For £1 a go, they had the opportunity to ‘Guess the Number of Sweets in the Jar’ – who knew how competitive that could get?! Congratulations Becky Carrington who came closest; just 3 over the total of 411! She wins the sweets and, of course, the bragging rights!
Many of our staff have been directly affected by mental health issues, whether personally or though friends and family, so this campaign is very close to our hearts. If you’re an employer, take a look at our checklist ‘Workplace Mental Wellbeing’ to ensure you have the right processes and support in place to help maintain your employees’ mental health.
There’s still a long way to go when it comes to mental health care and support for people; young, old and everything in between. The good news is that we’re talking about our mental health more than ever before. Every small action counts, whether you’re wearing yellow, volunteering or advocating for better mental health policies.
As we celebrate World Mental Health Day, let’s remember that taking care of our mental health is just as important as our physical health. By saying ‘Hello Yellow’, we’re spreading positivity, supporting one another, and making sure that no one has to face their mental health challenges alone, particularly children.
