An urban Approach to Plastic Pollution
On Saturday several members of our team, family and dogs braved the cold to BeMore green in support of the great community work of a local group, Southsea Beachwatch.
Southsea Beachwatch organises monthly beach cleans and litter surveys to provide vital data which will help influence the implantation and change of government policies. The local event is made up of a small team of passionate individuals who assist in the cleaning of both Southsea and Eastney beaches in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Their cleans are part of the Marine Conservation Society’s Beachwatch Scheme; the UK’s biggest beach clean and survey programme. Providing information on over 400 beaches, the data will be used in aid of the international effort to influence the government’s policies.
urban attended the Southsea Beach Clean to provide support with the ongoing battle with Plastic Pollution which can now be found on every beach in the world. There may be up to 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic pieces floating in the ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tonnes. The tragic effects of this plastic has resulted in over 150 plastic bottles littering each mile of UK beaches, approximately 5,000 items of marine plastic pollution found within 1 mile of UK beaches and the death of 100,000 marine mammals, turtles and 1 million sea birds from plastic pollution.
Laura, one of our architectural recruitment specialists declared, “the disturbing impacts of marine plastics should be a worry to us all. Marine wildlife often mistakes plastic waste for food and can die from starvation as their stomachs become filled with plastic debris. Initiatives like this beach clean are so important. I’m proud to dedicate my time to this cause and hopefully make a difference, no matter how small. I’m already looking forward to the next one. Hopefully, it will be a little warmer that day!”
How will urban be taking positive action to support the environment?
We believe that being green is important. This emergency is the biggest challenge facing our planet and industry. We are proud of our brand and colleagues for their ongoing support and passion for our planet. This coming Thursday, we will be planting trees at the St Thomas More’s Catholic School; incorporating the school and neighbouring parishes. We try to involve ourselves with multiple fundraising events. Mark and Charlotte recently completed the Vitality Big Half marathon and have another two in the pipeline, along with the National Three Peaks Challenge in June.
